part of the reason Moby Dick is so long and goes into so much detail about the intricate biology of ocean life and the philosophy of whales & whaling is because Melville was trying to recreate for the reader the experience of being on a long, arduous, meditative voyage at sea

Readers with patience, persistence and preseverance are rewarded with layers of discovery and enlightenment amongst the words that stain the pages. Art becomes genius when the entirety of the experience is considered.
