Not to make it into a religious discussion, but even Christianity talks about this IMHO. Very few references to people choosing Jesus, as opposed to many references to people being chosen. Not every human is a person.

The way I view it. Man (human with a soul) is an inherently spiritual being. It doesn't matter what his beliefs are if they are genuine. Those with souls can truly feel the divine. Everyone else is pretending and repeating rote rituals.
You either have it, or you don't.
