Helping a newbie set up a HWW and backup. To passphrase or not to passphrase?

I consider it equivalent (more or less) to using a 2-of-2 multi-sig, in terms of added security and added risk/responsibility.

Storing the passphrase separately from the words will improve your backup security. But both should theoretically be in steel… right?

What are your thoughts?

Military grade steel, and I would not risk using a passphrase on a trezor or ledger.

Make sure the words are pre-programed on his signing device to avoid spelling mistakes.

ColdCard and steel ✅✅

So you’re saying yes - use steel - for the passphrase (and store separately) for someone who is new to this, but is a quick learner?

When you say pre-programmed do you mean the feature where, when you begin typing a word, it suggests a list of possibilities according to the first letter(s)?
