Betelgeuse, a colossal star, is not expected to explode for tens of thousands of years, despite previous speculation. The star's "Great Dimming Event" in 2019 was caused by a chunk of its atmosphere being ejected into space, forming a dust cloud. Images captured using the MATISSE infrared instrument confirm the theory and show the star's surface brightening during the dimming event.
