can't seem to find them in europe but there is "soaker" preparations you can get that basicaly contain sodium percarbonate, which whitens things up gently and rips all the grease and stains, you just throw some of this into some hot water and then soak your clothes overnight and then rinse and squeeze and hang on the line and voila

i actually pretty much only wash my clothes in sodium carbonate, hardly ever use anything else, do it relatively cold, on a short cycle... 15 minutes to wash, then i run it again to rinse and done

the standard wash cycles kill the machine for no reason
