I've been thinking about it for a while and did a bunch of research over the weekend and feel like I better understand my options.

There is a place where I would like to have my tanks, but it is steep and full of brush and trees at the moment with rocky soil.

I'm going to take a look at it and see if I can work in some ferro cement tanks on contour.

I have to say I do like the look of Jack Spirko's miyagi pond. I get that it may not be the most efficient in terms of sheer pounds of monoculture production and labor, but it looks like an awful lot of fun and stacks a lot of utility.
