I did an in-depth interview a while back with Ben Jarvie of nostr:npub16uu27ark63w72qlrzvavp4kfp8ndkxz26eyzke6uckqr0v3k0k2q3sx0h6 about the relationship between the Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in case anyone missed it!
It may not mean much to my friends outside of New Zealand, but the Treaty of Waitangi (signed on this day in 1840) is an important foundational document in our history.
Some fascinating history around Kīngitanga and King Tāwhiao's petition to the Queen to set up a Maori-led banking system and the utter appropriation of Māori imagery by the RBNZ, which is essentially a colonial project manifest. It is an interesting case study as one of the largest crown entities (technically, a statutory corporation) in New Zealand to overtly ignore the principles of the treaty, in particular rangatiratanga.
