Specter is also 1x/4x with add ons for rmrs or backup irons and the flip between the two magnifiers is flawless. Better everything. Acogs are not adjustable, you just get 4x which is why you need the rmr. Keep a lookout for used elcans and you can get one only a little more than an acog.

So the elcan specter is a 1-4x technically? Not fixed 4x?

It's a 1x or a 4x

No in between. You can switch from 1 to 4 on the fly with a little switch

Have you personally used either this and/or acog? Plus any recs on ways I can 'test drive' either of these sights? Part of me is worried about dropping 1k+ on something I've never used lol

I've looked through both but have never actually fired a weapon with either though. As far as test drive, I'm sorry I don't have a good recommendation 😭 maybe chat with some folks at your LGS is the best I got.
