But then watching Zena The Warrior Princess, it really seems like the same terrible writing, but Lucy Lawless does a much better job with the acting, so the whole thing kinda seems like a parody of an old heroic saga.

Zena is ridiculous. And I keep wondering whether it was meant to be comedy. I laugh out loud watching it. but it is clearly 3 or 4 steps above Hercules.

Television was so bad for so long. Hit shows like "Laverne and Shirley" simply had no redeeming qualities AT ALL.

Look at "Who's the Boss?" Why was that made? Who would ever watch that trash? OMG.
