I learnt a lovely expression today:

"Your vanity is showing through the holes in your coat"

In other words, it's obvious that you are signalling your virtue by means of looking austere.

To borrow the nomanclature of pick-up artists (so-called), you are "peacocking".

Poverty-peacocking.

What do you all think of that?

Wearing a $1200 pair of distressed jeans.

That type of thing for sure!

I've never heard that expression. I like it

Like it but doesn’t fit much for Costa Rica as am definitely not alone in dressing like a vagabond here. I was congratulated on dressing up once. Shorts, T and flip flops. Asked what they meant and response was first t shirt they’d seen me in with no holes!

You're the real deal ElGuiri

it's just Costa Rica man. Nothing lasts here and it changes some of the perception I think. I've never been very materialistic but it is interesting watching people move here who are and slowly having that eroded by entropy of a tropical environment

Entropy is the natural state of all things, everything else is a tantrum.
