I think it's rather hard to explain the *first* part, let's say, the (M,C), (M',C') relationship, to the unfamiliar reader. I particularly thought the second half fleshed out the issues very well. And by the way, I refuse to believe that the optimal base is not in fact e :)

why is e optimal base? I like the kind of content where people passionately argue for base-12. good stuff.

I'm joking but whenever you end up with an answer to an optimization problem, using some kind of empirical or quantitative method, that's "a bit less than three", then it kind of *should* be e (all the more so if it's about bases/logs!)
