RESTORATION EFFORTS AT MOUNT VERNON

____________________

While on vacation to Virginia, my family and I toured Mount Vernon. This was the beloved home of George Washington and is a beautiful estate overlooking the Potomac River.

While walking around the restored outbuildings, I talked with a crew working on the siding restoration on the smokehouse building. I asked what the notes were on the blue painters tape that were scattered around the outside of the walls. The reply was that it was notes about what restorative measure needed to be taken and some where to mark the original nail holes.

I learned that the restoration of Mount Vernon tries to keep all original and previous repair work. However, if a board needs to be replaced because of extensive damage the nail holes are used to determine the boards original width. It is then replaced with a new yellow pine board.

Their work was a slow and tedious process but is slowly and lovingly returning Mount Vernon to its original form.
