Μaybe you need a different approach on organising food storage. For example i find it convenient to have next ro every shelf that stores something, an nfc tag that is rewritable where i keep information about the date of storage plus other details if needed, so every time i scan them and i know quickly what is to expire soon and what i have to replace. Others may need a database accecible via a reverse proxy web server so when they are in the garden they can see what to take or not. Who knows... You will find your way i believe.
