Imagine if for the last three years, the governments of the world told everyone that the fluffy clouds in the sky were made of cotton candy. They offered no proof, but put plenty of experts on tv who backed up their claim. For a time, you could not eat in a restaurant, travel by plane, or achieve employment unless you bought into and proclaimed allegiance to the idea. Celebrities encouraged everyone to go along. The media proclaimed, "Just look at it, can't you see? If you can't see it you're a selfish fool!" Over half of the population complied. You did not. You explained why it was unlikely the clouds were made of cotton candy through evidence obtained from the government's own data. You shared this information openly. You asked if these things that they were being told had ever been true in the past. Nobody answered. Nobody listened. You were laid off from your job because of your beliefs. Eventually people began to realize that the clouds didn't act like cotton candy in any way. They realized that the government persisted in telling a falsehood. The people wanted to forget. They felt ridiculed, taken advantage of. Eventually people became angry. Angrier than you when people weren't listening to you. In fact, you feel calmer now that people are waking up. You want to help them, ease the burden that they are carrying. You remember the pain you felt and don't wish that on anyone. The government sought to divide, but on this issue, accountability, you are united. You wonder how we got here. What a preposterous idea, the idea that clouds were made of cotton candy. You can't believe anyone fell for it, and today, neither can anyone else.
