Can you put pics in DMs? Does everything have to be hosted somewhere else? If you run a relay can you then upload pics to relay?

There is no image hosting in the protocol.

Mmmm. A challenge to make pics and things easier to note.

Some clients have integrated one or more image APIs. #[3] has been on record saying he doesn’t support hard-coding this into Damus.

Dude there's no user Manuel figure it out stupid

Yes, links for pics work in messages, you can use nostr.build to upload.

You could have a website and load pictures on it and put links into nostr. But yes Nostr only takes links to pictures.

So aws hosts your pics. If I had a laptop running as a server or a "the Bitcoin machine" could I use that as the host and link from it?

You can host an image URL on any public server but if you get a lot of traffic, you’ll be responsible for any bandwidth costs.

I’m not that versed on all this, but you are correct on both counts. If you use some big box web hosting service it’s likely on aws or something similar, but the alternative is you host your own website. I don’t know if I’d reco hosting it on the same machine your bitcoin is on, but it’s possible. My vision of the future is that we have different network devices that serve as you bitcoin node, you lightning node, you Nostr relay, and then your webhosting for media like pictures and videos.
