If Monero had been the first cryptocurrency the entire asset class would've been completed illegalized in the west years ago.

It's simple. Obfuscation of elliptic curve signatures using rings of size 16, and a hash function implementation that requires a large amount of cache rendering it impossible for ASICs and GPUs.
