#Ingress has been released as beta back in 2012 by Niantic, the same company that released Pokemon Go in 2016.

Ingress has a SF background story with aliens ingressing our world using exotic matter coming out of portals. Portals are important places in the real world. There are two opposing factions, the Enlightened and the Resistance. Both seek control of the portals, try to connect them with links to build fields.

Ingress is highly competitive and players sometimes coordinate their actions across continents to build really big fields. Below is a screenshot from the web based game map showing some fields covering the USA and part of the pacific ocean
