For sure there’s a benefit to knowing things.. but compared to last year, it’s a lot less. Give it another 20 and I wonder if there will be any other than the comfort that comes from understanding some things.

Depends on the field and level. A lot of research at university is hands on and practical and forms the basis of new learning before AI has had a change to learn it.
