I just don't get the verification part if on a domain with 100s or more users also on it. If I see a potentially imposter user I have to recall what domain they had a NIP-05 on?

Yeah my bad, verification is old lingo. It doesn't really verify anything other than:

a) knowing someone paid for a service (if it's paid)

or

b) they control the domain if it's self-hosted (which is also paid)

or

c) they leverage their reputation, f.e. with a GitHub pages hosted NIP-05

Free ones don't mean anything.

Is true, can just buy domain and point to Github pages. Along with using for personal or project site. I also have Relayable's npub in DNS TXT records.

But a provider is good if non-technical, is better than nothing.
