If you ask questions about people and let them talk about themselves for awhile they will leave the interaction thinking “I like that guy”.
If you talk about yourself they will leave the interaction thinking “I don’t really like that guy”
Unless, of course, they really like what "that guy" had to say

If he does, then a solid, back-and-forth conversation will occur with both people feeling gratified and enriched by the end.
If he doesn't, he will still likely leave the conversation respecting *that guy* for taking interest in him.
