Certain cyberspace objects may require an avatar's presence to interact with, but others might not and would be useable by anyone passing by. So, an avatar is not strictly necessary for making use of d-space. In terms of adoption, it is better this way as people who are not cyberspace power users can still make use of and enjoy d-space to some degree.
