There is no protocol fix for bad implementations, if a client has a feat for you to update your username in your profile and by doing so erases/overwrites everything else you had in the profile, then it's a bug, not a protocol problem. Also, NIPS are consensus standards, that doesn't mean there aren't clients that expand on standard NIPs.

I can't agree more. Even if the protocol is perfect, which it's not, a malicious person can always implement a bug into the client or relay.

Pick your client carefully.
