What is this "canary" they are talking about? I pulled the old site and it looks like they have an icon of a bird but what dose it mean?

That’s a canary. The bird. It’s a thing you put on a website or something and when you get compromised you take the canary away signifying that you are compromised without having to specifically state it so those who are compromising you don’t know you told anyone.
IIRC it actually provides legal protection even if it's known. Legal distinction between stating something that's under confidentiality and removing a pre-existing canary. I wouldn't swear to it though.
You are correct.
They did it wrong though.
They had to take an action to do it. action=Legal hot water. You want no action. Like a monthly that you have to renew manually, so if it lapses we know.
