My mom would always use baking soda with a little water to make it into a paste, and then put that on the sting. Alternatively charcoal powder with water, or tobacco with water.

Haven't tried it myself. Sounds like it would help, especially if you do it for someone else. It's the conveyance of trying to help that comforts.
