The synology itself is silent. The noise will depend on the drives you get.

Decide how much storage you want first. Take that number and double it. That's how much you should prob get cause it goes much faster than you'd expect. That'll dictate what size drives you need. Decide how many bays you need considering the noise you can tolerate. Generally bigger drives gonna be much louder under load.

sure good idea - also check specs of interface SATA3 etc - so u can easily expand disk by disk

I'm in the same boat, but i'm trying to work out the drive speed, do we really need 7200 or is 5400 good enough? looking at the WD Red
