It's weird to speak with people who think CBDCs are farfetched and can never happen. You can show them every press release or whitepaper authored by a government saying "we are going to introduce a CBDC" or "we are going to eliminate cash" and doubters come up with bizarre (to me) justifications for interpreting the plain language published by the government as something innocuous.
If you ask them what conduct has that government engaged in over the past few decades that leads you to believe it is disinterested in monitoring all transactions and controlling how money is spent, and you'll get a blank stare.
It's like speaking with people who doubt gold's inherent value, especially during economic crises. For the past several years central banks have literally been breaking purchase records for gold. Why would central banks, the entities that "control" a country's money supply, be so aggressive in seeking to trade its currency for giant amounts of "worthless" gold bullion? The answer should be self-evident but, again, you'll hear really weird explanations that deny reality.
