Do I know any mechanics on here? Trying not to get scammed or taken advantage of…

Long story short:

Dropped my vehicle off at a mechanic two days ago to replace the LED brake light. They ordered a new one and the part in front of the light had a crack so that had to be replaced too. ($750 in total)

Apparently when they tried to plug in the new light it didn’t work and then charged another $150 to do a diagnostic.

After the diagnostic the mechanic thinks water got in somehow and now I need a body control module and then need to have it reprogrammed (another including a used BCM $1,000)

So…. My question is… is there a way I can buy the body control module and do it myself? And if so how do I reprogram it?

Is $1,000 a lot for this? Feels like a lot. In over my head with this one.

Advice greatly appreciated. 🙏🏼

Unless you have access to the OEM system used to program things, no, you can't do that yourself. This is complete and utter douche moves in order to force you back to the dealership or repair shop. It sucks. You can't take do much about it except support Right To Repair laws.
