Ah okay. These smaller antennas are like less than a mile in urban areas. All depends on line of sight, but if you have a lot of them spaced out and connected you may be able to achieve longer distances. This is pretty much my first jump in anything related to radio besides a basic scanner.

Correct, it mostly requires line of sight, barring some reflective surfaces that may help around obstacles.
You could also create point-to-multipoint networks where one access point can serve multiple stations. Depending on the brand " I'm told " up to 30 is possible. But it does divide the datarate down since they use time-division duplexing.
