Imagine a couple decides to “open” their marriage. They start having sex with dozens of couples, and a year later they end up divorcing. When asked if they had any regrets, the wife replies, “No; if our love was real and meant to last it would have been able to endure anything.”

When you take something that was intended to operate under certain constraints and endure certain types of challenges to certain ends and willfully neglect it by normalizing a prolonged level of abuse that’s totally outside the pale, you can’t throw up your hands and blame marriage as an institution. The blame lies fully with those who surrendered their reason in the name of “open-mindedness” and “tolerance.”
