Rubber wouldn’t last long in an auto caliper either.
There’s a good reason they make them out of asbestos or ceramics. They get extremely hot. Even then you can smell them overheating as they fade on some long hills if your driving hard. Big rig brakes can often be smelled in a state of overheating too.
I imagine if you did enough of a high speed downhill on your bike you’d be leaving a smoke trail too. Maybe the large exposed wheel is enough to dissipate it…..
