Depending on which state you live in courts have determined two ways of dealing with engagement rings being returned or kept by the bride.

the court ruled that the gift of the engagement ring requires you to complete a marriage ceremony to keep it, whereas in Montanna the courts ruled that a gift is a gift not a bilateral contract
