It cannot be destroyed, only transformed. Storing energy is complicated, energy itself is plenty everywhere. The Sun could easily fuel the colonization of the entire solar system from our pov.
The amount of subsidized solar panels installed in the past decades makes me think the rumor I've heard many years ago might be actually true regarding the free energy. That or the technology is obsolete. Take it with a grain of salt, obviously. It's just my spidey sense.
