legalman's declaration that in the past "humans learned how to figure stuff out" without any formal education at all is not only true but extremely important. we do need to learn to read and write, including cursive, and basic arithmetic. the three "r"'s. virtually any adult, especially parents, should be able to teach these to children. kids are naturally curious - they will accept learning at least the basics
