The Republic of Ghana has officially legalized the use of Bitcoin following the passage of the Virtual Asset Service Provider Bill on December 18, 2025. The legislation establishes a regulatory framework for crypto and digital asset platforms, ensuring transactions are conducted under accountable and transparent oversight. The Bank of Ghana also emphasized that the new law will help safeguard the financial system while addressing risks tied to unregulated crypto activity.
Under the new framework, crypto exchanges and service providers must be licensed and supervised, strengthening consumer protection and lowering transaction costs for banks and small businesses. With an estimated 3 million users around 17% of the adult population already using digital currencies. Ghana now joins a select group of nations that have moved to fully legalize crypto use at the national level.
