Absolutely it is. There's a cool open source project called Pwnagotchi that automates the process using machine learning, is that the Pi project you were thinking of?

Looks similar but I think it was Wi-Fi Pineapple.

The project I saw was a Pi with a GPS board and OLED display in a 3D printed case with battery.

Seemed like a cool fun project.

That sounds like Pwnagotchi to me, but interested to see what it is if it's another project.

I got a Pineapple but it's overpriced for what it is - there's scripts on GitHub that automate building the Pineapple firmware on much cheaper consumer routers that use the same SoC. It's just a bunch of open source tools with a friendly UX on top of OpenWrt after all.

That said, I can personally attest to the Pineapple's ability to fit in a small bag and be controlled from a smartphone while it's powered by a regular power pack used to change phones etc and it does have impressive range.

I went searching and maybe it was a Pumpkin Pi build. I can’t seem to find the exact one and Duck Duck Go keeps showing the same stuff over and over again.
