Currently, I like this badge thing as a cute way for communities to create and share stickers for fun: for free.

If I start to see this turn into a profit shill I’m going to opt out.

Having parameters around what constitutes a badge being awarded is totally fine in my opinion, but please do not sell access to a badge. That’s where you lose me.

If you offer a paid service and give the badge for free to show that someone is using that service, I think that’s cute. I’m talking about charging directly for a badge.

You can discourage this. Can bitcoiners please have a creative fun thing without exploiting it like shitcoiners & NFT people do? Please?

We’re going to see a lot of creative ways that Nostr events can be used. I actually really like badges because I’m a gamer and they’re fun, but I don’t see it as a revolution. It’s just a sticker.

How would you feel about people paying/charging for a temporary badge?

Say for example it served as a pass to an event (a ticket or pass)?

Or something like that. What if they could serve a real world purpose as opposed to a monke jpeg?

Coming out this from the lens of marketing strategy for a bitcoin community product? I would say no. There is truly no difference between a monkey JPEG and a sticker. These things should be fun and creative and we shouldn’t try to turn them into functionality that already exists better in other places. Once you open the door for something like what you are describing, it spirals into shitcoinery.

I totally see your point, and yes the risk or "temptation" to accidentally fall down a shitcoin rabbit hole is something we should be mindful of but it shouldn't stifle progress.

You can make an obtuse argument that zapping over nostr is a third layer of shitcoining and not truly "Bitcoin"

I think if badges can serve some kind of legitimate utility beyond a digital beanie baby it is at least worth the consideration and experimentation, keeping in mind nostr is actually a protocol completely independent of Bitcoin. It's not even a blockchain. I think we are going to see a lot of unique ways to monotize things over nostr likely many of which haven't even been considered yet.

I am good with keeping it cute. I am not advocating badges being anything more than a sticker.

I am just wondering what the possibilities are, and if it is possible someone is probably going to try it whether we like it or not.

Using hard money to directly support content someone has created that you enjoyed or learned from is actually the opposite of shitcoinery, that is a very bitcoin thing to do. It also provides an incentive for people to produce less noise and more signal, and takes the profit margin away from centralized platforms, and gives it directly to us.

Trying to create fake value with a graphic is not the same.

Not everything needs to be reinvented, we have QR codes and bitcoin for event passes.

Letting a sticker be a sticker is not stifling progress or innovation, from my view. 🙏

If you take the perspective that a layer 2 is not actually truly Bitcoin and lightning is a shitcoin, which is a perspective held by some, you can make this case.

I am of the mind I don't really care what happens on Nostr and I am just here for the ride 💜

Lightning can’t be a shitcoin: it’s not a coin. 🫶 I haven’t encountered anyone who thinks that in the wild but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that’s out there.

You can’t avoid it, scammer will always take advantage of people. But it is easy to spot and shame them or even block them 😁

I mean, I hope badges.page charges a fee for creating a new badge or awarding badges. That will definitely reduce some badge spam.
