Also if you get sunshine & real food you won't need to supplement D (unless you live at the poles or something)

I think he's making the point there won't be much sunshine for the next few months.

My take on the cheese grater - is that an LED light?

Hm. I understood grey days to mean tough times (hence the weapon & Bible) but the VitD points in the direction you've suggested
