After the US government tried to prosecute Phil Zimmerman as an international arms dealer for releasing PGP encryption to the world, cypherpunks published the code in books, tattooed it on their bodies, and printed it on tshirts, putting the US government in the position of having to defend the banning of books, tattoos and tshirts in court.

They dropped the charges.
