⚡️🥖 NEW - Subway used to bake bread from scratch in every store, that was a core part of their branding for decades

Now bread comes pre-frozen and can’t legally be classified as bread

Subway was purchased by a private equity firm in 2023

Subway bread contains so much sugar it can’t be classified as bread due to a 2020 Irish Supreme Court ruling in a tax dispute, where Subway’s bread was deemed a confection due to high sugar content (10% of the flour weight, exceeding Ireland’s 2% threshold for bread). This was specific to Irish tax law under Value Added Tax (VAT) regulations, not a global food classification. (It remains legally bread in America because our food standards and regulation agencies are horrible)

🤢🤮🤢

This is always how their bread has been made. My sister worked there 20 years ago and it was always frozen dough sticks they baked in store.

I worked at a subway restaurant in 2010/2011 and it was already like this. Bread, cookies, meats, everything was frozen and we had to prepare things to defrost overnight for the next day inside of a cold store…
