I'm not paying a relay operator to fight spam. Spam wasn't an issue for me. It'd just an added bonus. I'm paying relay operators because server infrastructure isn't free. But I do agree that we'll always need free relays.
servers are quite cheap, the main push for paid relays was to stop spam, and its a silly solution
