If an intellectual good is proprietary, virtually the only way it's a good one is if it is not enforced by a government. If it is closed source but doesn't rely on legal battles over IP laws, and simply hides its source from other companies, etc., then it's ethical, and ethical action is usually a sign of a good company that makes good products.
The moment a company or actor relies heavily on IP laws, it goes to shit.
Generally companies that embrace open source for themselves or that embrace usability on open source platforms are good, too. DaVinci Resolve is the best nonlinear video editing suite out there, and it's proprietary. I love it. It runs on Linux like a charm. AMD embraces the open source community and has my vote whenever it's time to upgrade hardware. Compatibility on open source operating systems is easier with AMD laptop GPUs even with fewer eyes on them than on NVIDIA GPUs, because NVIDIA is so paranoid. They lost all potential future revenue from me and many other Linux users for earning a reputation like that.
