Some legacy approximation of disk size. IIRC it came close to being removed. Try searching for in the github issues.
Looks like it gives a stat for the utxo set. Each utxo is 50 + the size of the scriptPubkey. https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/10426/files

Thanks for the help all. Indeed 'database-independent measure of size' is something that makes sense, albeit it's a bit obscure of course.
