Due to the design of the fediverse, I think there will be some commercial instances eventually. I don't think the fediverse as a whole will commercialize.

The longer the arch the better, slow and steady will win the race. The longer it is allowed to build its community out side of the eye the better they will have to fight twice as hard to corrupt it.
