I had this experience when I first came on, but with some time, I now get a lot more interaction than I used to on X.

I looked at who the people I follow are following.
Another good option is to search for the # that interests me.
e.g. #privacy #3dprinting #linux …
I have mixed feelings about the method but you can open a person's profile and follow all their follows, and then curate.
In the end I didn't enjoy this, and would have rathered aggressively follow anyone who seems of interest, then curate.

Its up to your personal taste buddy. Pick someone you think you synchronize with, and follow all their followers. Then remove the ones you dont like one at a time.
