because your brain automatically discards 99% of all information and only the 1% it deems relevant reaches your consciousness.

faces are deemed relevant. other things not.

you don't actually see 99% of what's in front of your eyes and a lot of what you do see ( like these faces ) isn't actually there.

you may not call this an algorithm but it is certainly a filter and not very different from what Twitter uses to assemble your timeline.
