I don't like posting to other social media services nowadays, solely because of the character limit. I hate limiting my words. 600 characters should not be not too long thing to post on social media. #SocialMedia #Writing

It teaches you brevity, which really tightens and cleans up your writing, because you have to look for ways to say what you want in fewer words (and without text-speak and abbreviations; that's cheating). ;-)

But now I'm on Mastodon, and my instance supports 5000 characters per post, I really enjoy that too. It's freeing.

But as you can see, my writing is starting to become unnecessarily verbose again. Maybe I should override the character limit in Sengi to be 500 or so, to force myself to be brief again. :-D

nostr:npub1cmgqvz7xr07euwkum3mjghjqcu4d3k2fcyf6g4uwwe5ggnd6fetq0wrzd2 Years ago I embraced the character limit because the things I posted were kinda pointless, simple thoughts. Quite quickly I learned that it is annoyingly limiting if you want to share anything deeper, complex, or want to have discussions with others - or arguments, as it usually is with social media.

I think this is the reason why so many people ended up making long threads in Twitter. It becomes even harder if you want to include hashtags and links. With scientific posts, you also have reserve space for sharing the original sources, tag the scientists and so on.

I understand why some people appreciate the character limit - limitations are often extremely useful. In the context of social media, I personally find them too limiting. I also enjoy reading other people's posts when there are details and small stories.

One of the reasons I was drawn to your instance was the huge character limit. Makes sharing my messy and verbose brain dumps and shower thoughts so much easier.

This post is a good example, sorry 😅
