Fun question.
I often refer to John Rawls’ classical liberalism.
Freedom to act, think, behave, be, whatever you want, with the reasonable limitation defined as the line where the exercise of one’s own freedom impinges upon another’s ability to exercise theirs.
He offers the concept of a “veil of ignorance” where you know you will be born into a society, but you don’t know who you’ll be (with regard to gender, socioeconomic status, race, etc). Under the veil of ignorance, Rawls argues that most rational people would “design” a society that maximizes individual freedom as described above, while providing the least-bad experience for the people born into the “lowest” (or, most difficult) layers of society. Protected downside (safety nets) with minimal limitations on upside (free enterprise).
Thanks for getting me thinking about it 🤙
