Heres a take:

Normies don't care about freedom tech because they don't own a deminimus amount of the world's capital to be truly impacted. They are not the true target, just disposable NPCs.

Politicians grab for power so they can benefit from and attempt to control those who own capital. The capital elite who own the majority of the world's capital seek political favor to effect regulatory changes in ongoing attempts to maintain their hold of their capital. Controlling capital ultimately controls the trajectory of the world.

Normies are simply pawns and collateral damage in the game of symbiotic parasites between politicians and the capitalist elite. As long as they are distracted and occasionally placated, they will always turn a blind eye as they are trodden upon, just to maintain the status quo.
