When eBay initially acquired Skype, the NSA partnered with them but did not achieve their goal of gaining access to Skype's source code or controlling its network. eBay then sold Skype at a loss, after which Microsoft acquired it. Microsoft then changed Skype's architecture to make all communications go through Microsoft servers, allowing the NSA to potentially access decrypted Skype data at these central servers if needed.

And Skype has become a shit show. Now morphed into Teams which is built to be centralized first with all things pointing to Exchange.
