I don't understand the Bolt cars one... Why wouldn't they have them? Is that an American thing, not to have handles?

No, because I live in a country where many (smaller) french & asian car models are used for ride sharing services and often times they don’t have door handles. even on front seats 😁
And as a tall guy, I always grab them actually, especially in condensed traffic.
So it was a positive surprise in Prague. You find mostly Skoda Oktavia or other medium sized car
models 😀😆 
Don’t think I’ve ever been in a car without one 🤔
